OPEN USA Team Update | May 2024

In Acts 8 we see ordinary followers of Jesus taking the Good News as they scatter from Jerusalem to the coastal plain to Phoenicia, by boat to Cyprus, and north to Antioch. Michael Green says: “This must often have been not formal preaching, but the informal chattering to friends and chance acquaintances, in homes and wine shops, on walks, and around market stalls…. All this makes it abundantly clear that in contrast to the present day, when Christianity is highly intellectualized and dispensed by a professional clergy to a constituency increasingly confined to the middle class, in the early days the faith was spontaneously spread by informal evangelists, and had its greatest appeal among the working classes” (Michael Green, Evangelism in the Early Church, page 243-245).

Green says elsewhere in his book, and is quoted by Tim Keller:

“80% or more of evangelism in the early church was done not by ministers or evangelists” but rather by ordinary disciples doing life the way God designed it (Tim Keller, How to Reach the West Again: Six Essential Elements of a Missionary Encounter, quoting from: Evangelism in the Early Church, Michael Green).

I want to thank each of you because in running a network that facilitates “ordinary followers of Jesus” living “normal” lives and doing B4T, you are helping the church return to its first century roots. We must re-learn what the early church well understood in Jesus’ statement, ”As you go, make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:18, more faithful to the original Greek).

This year, we are supporting both the biennial OPEN Connect and the annual OPEN Expo. We are praying through the Expo theme now; but for Connect, the discernment team has prayed and sensed the LORD’s guidance already. The 2024 Connect theme will be: Venture Together.

The word “venture” is an old word, stemming from Latin and is defined as: “to risk going somewhere or doing something that might be dangerous or unpleasant, or to risk saying something that might be criticized” (Cambridge Dictionary). Think of venture capital: it is the riskiest form of investment, pouring money into early-stage startups that often haven’t created their product-market fit yet. Venture Capitalists risk the most for the highest potential reward. As B4Ters, we know what it is to put everything on the line and need God to show up, or we will fail. But we can easily feel like we are alone, forgetting that we are in a JOINT venture with God and with each other. We will walk through stories from the Scriptures and from within our network to encourage one another that not only are we venturing with God, we are also venturing with one another.

Thanks to each of you for venturing together through your incredible service to God in the B4T movement through OPEN, and for venturing alongside those that labor among those who have no local church!

We recently finished praying through the 30 days of Ramadan. Each day, I thought about the challenge Ramadan poses for B4Ters as they navigate honoring local culture and traditions while bringing the “fragrance of Christ” into the lives of those they work alongside (2 Corinthians 2:15). I also thought about what it means to have a follower of Christ among them as for 30 days Muslims give extra effort to good works and prayer, in the hope that their efforts will improve their future prospects.

I thought of Proverbs 25:11: “Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances.” Those are the words we pray B4Ters will be able to speak to their employees, vendors, customers, and neighbors. Your service to B4Ters–whatever form it takes–undergirds their ability to do just that. Thank you for every act of faithfulness as you contribute to fulfilling our vision of seeing “Businesses thriving and making Jesus known among all the least reached.”

2024 Connect

Registration is continuing on track and we are refining the schedule with great presenters. The theme of “Venture Together” has been created by the OPEN Council and was communicated to OPEN workers in early April. Currently, we are struggling with securing a worship leader/band, and we could use your prayers as we seek a team to lead worship for Connect.

We currently have 133 adults and 75 kids registered. We are on pace to have a total of 250-300 adults and 100-150 kids.

The Communication department has been hard at work with supporting the communication around B4T Expo and the OPEN Connect. If you need anything sent out (for any reason), please refer to the Mailers process on the Intranet.

Coaching

The Coaching Team wants all to know, and be thankful for, the fact that several new coaches have joined their team. Some of those coaches reside outside of the US, which sometimes provides an opportunity for more visits and easier time scheduling.

The team is also continuing to work on raising the visibility of coaching services and the advantages of B4Ters having one.

Mentoring

During the last couple of months, the Mentoring Team has seen an increase in the number of difficult issues that some of our B4Ters are experiencing, and both the mentors and B4ters have seen the fruits of the mentoring process working to help in those situations as experienced mentors come alongside mentees to help work through those situations.

Lions’ Den

The Lions’ Den team is hard at work preparing for Lions’ Den 2024 at Connect in July. Founders are being prepared, and many Investors have stepped up to participate. They ask you to join them in praying for God to bring more B4T Founders and Investors as well as the decision of whether to hold portions of the Lions’ Den virtually.

B4T Champions

We are still looking for someone to take this over. There is interest in starting a new group this summer, but no one to coordinate it.

Church Relations

Church Relations is on the move! Our eastern representative is planning to join Brian Humbles in Raleigh, NC for talks with the 2024 OPEN Expo host church (Summit Church). This is a church that should be much more involved with OPEN than it has been in the past. With your prayers, we hope to begin that turn-around this month.

There is a multi-campus church in Michigan that has expressed interest in having a Church Relations representative visit to give an orientation about B4T. It was originally proposed for April, but we’ll have to see what happens. We hope to be able to call on multiple OPEN friends that live in southeast Michigan to help us in that orientation meeting.

Student Worker Program

The Student Worker Program has come to an early halt, as Bethany Global University announced last month that it plans to move from being an on-campus school to a completely virtual one. Violeta, the B4T site leaders, and the student mentors are working together to help each student who was in the field transition smoothly to what is next.

COMING

We’re excited to welcome John Kirby as the Future Workers Advocate. God is working through John’s extensive network of people who are at various stages of their journey toward B4T. He takes the long view as he sees many of them are years out, but still need coaching and discipling as they work through the challenges of preparation. Welcome, John!

From John:

God has moved in significant ways since the OPEN Expo in Nov ’23. We rejoice in having one apprentice who began his 18 month long apprenticeship in Central Asia and has already had a huge impact, helping not only business operations, but relationally connecting to those inside and outside of the kingdom. A summer intern is also destined for this same B4T at the end of May.

Out of phone calls and texts with other future workers, we’re planning an online cohort to begin soon. I hope to establish an ongoing connection to route at least 20 future workers to ongoing B4Ts. My goals are to foster a community that helps each other move forward toward becoming a B4Ter.  Additionally, I am  staying in close contact with the apprentice and intern mentioned above (both of these workers have significant spiritual support through their church’s missions pastors, with whom I’ve also connected).
