Becoming a father opened a whole new door on life for me. Becoming a grandfather has opened yet another door. When my son Bob was born I remember spending hours holding him and planning ahead – thinking through what “I” needed to “do,” and what I needed to “do” as a godly father. This past week, I invested hours sitting on the couch holding Sophie, my one week old granddaughter. But this time was not spent in reflection or planning, but prayer. Prayers of praise, thanksgiving and intercession. In talking with Jesus He reminded me of the times with Bob. I sense I’ve learned a few things about life and work and God these past 33 years. Life does not start with me, but with Him. Work does not start with me, but with Him. That also includes family, sports, etc. Whatever we do, starts and ends with Him.
In Philippians 3:12 Paul says he’s not “arrived.” Quite a statement, considering Philippians was written near the end of his life. Solomon who had some good ideas as well adds, Wise men are always open to new ideas. In fact, they look for them (Proverbs 18:15). Learning—seeking wisdom—is a key to life and work. As we get older, we should be learning faster. Our experiences both in the Spirit and in the world plus our greater understanding of the Word enable us to gain better, godlier, understanding, quicker.
Learning is available to all, whatever our age, education, wealth, status. The opportunities to learn are as endless as the heavens. The ability to learn, and apply what we learn is essential to maturing in Christ. The Scriptures teach us that learning is an attitude, something we are to daily seek. In the marketplace, in a changing world, there’s lots to learn. Let’s be learners.
